3rd Aug - day 1, a good start

Opening Ceremony - world premiere of The River of Clouds

As reported earlier, the world premiere of Dr. Mui's work was delivered to some 1,400 festival participants in the opening ceremony in the evening. The audience was captivated by the beauty of the piece, and so were ourselves!

The opening ceremony was also filled with inspiring annotations and of course musical performances by representatives of locations within the Asia Pacific region, about the history and future of the Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival.

Competitions

Good initial results have been achieved in the preliminary rounds of all 4 categories of competition held today in which the delegation members compete. The numbers of entries of Hong Kong competitors making their way into the final round are as follow:

Duo (Open) - 8 entries
Duo (Junior) - 6 entries
Chromatic Solo (Open) - 7 entries
Chromatic Solo (Junior) - 8 entries
Tremolo Solo without accompaniment (Junior) - 1 entry

Preliminary round of competition continues tomorrow on Tremolo Solo without accompaniment(Open), Trio (Open and Junior) and 4-6 Persons Ensemble (Open and Junior). The final round of Duo (Open) will also be held tomorrow.

First overseas performance of three local compositions

Dr. Ho Pak-cheong and Dr. Tse Chun-yan gave the first performance of the following local compositions in the invited performance session in the afternoon:

John Chen: Autumn Water (for two chromatic harmonicas and recorded synthesizer and guitar, composed in 2003)
Tang Lok-yin: Duo (for two chromatic harmonicas, composed in 2006)
Hui Cheung-wai: Benevolence (for chromatic harmonica and guqin, composed in 2003)

2nd Aug - arrival

Our journey begins...

We met at the airport at 7:30am and taking the flight at 10:10am, well before the adverse weather due to the imminent typhoon set in.

With our group of over 100 passengers, Cathay Pacific Airways has opened dedicated check-in counters for us.

Arriving at Taipei around noon, we were greeted by Dr. Liaw Shiumn-jen, our long term friend, the founder of the first Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival a decade ago, who also organises this festival.

We were then carried out of the airport in 3 coaches. One of them brought those solo competitors who would be competing tomorrow to a practice venue to have a final dose of practice, while the others went for sight-seeing.

The group met in the late afternoon to check in the hotel before splitting again, with some official members joining the welcoming dinner of the organiser, while the majority of the group enjoyed a feast at the hotel. All geared up for the festival opening early tomorrow morning.

Enthusiasm of Hong Kong in the 6th Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival / 香港踴躍參與第六屆亞太口琴節

Following the success in Hong Kong in the last festival, the biennial Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival returns to Taipei, its origin a decade ago, on 3 to 6 August 2006. It is estimated to attract 2,500 people and would be of the largest scale of any international harmonica festivals. Harmonica festivals encompass every kind of harmonica (like tremolo, diatonic and chromatic) and every style of harmonica music (like classical, jazz, blues), and its programme includes opening ceremony, competition, concerts, master classes, seminars, and closing ceremony.

There will be about 200 persons from Hong Kong joining the festival which breaks previous records of participation in international harmonica festivals. The delegation organised by the Hong Kong Harmonica Association consists of 145 persons, and all of them carry various missions:

(1) The 80-person orchestra formed by delegates will deliver the world premiere of a major work dedicated to the harmonica orchestra, The River of Clouds, composed by the local composer Dr. Mui Kwong-chiu.

(2) Renowned performers Ho Pak-cheong, Tse Chun-yan, and Ho Kit-fun will perform works of local composers, introducing the original music of Hong Kong to overseas audience. Works to be performed include Hui Cheung-wai’s Fantasy on a Love Before Time and Benevolence (for harmonica and guqin), and Tang Lok-yin’s Duo.

(3) King’s Harmonica Quintet is invited to perform in the concert on 5 August, joining with Tse Chun-yan to play Dvorak’s String Quintet Op.97, arranged for harmonicas.

(4) 7 representatives of Hong Kong Harmonica Association will judge in the competition:

(5) Bass player of King’s Harmonica Quintet, Johnny Kuan will deliver the first-ever bass harmonica seminar on 5 August

(6) Cecilia Poon – bronze prize in chromatic solo, bronze prize in duo, bronze prize in ensemble, Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival 2002 in Japan; 1st runner-up in duo, Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival 2004 in Hong Kong

Keeping on the keen atmosphere in the Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival in 2004 and World Harmonica Festival 2005, the local players participate actively in the competition. There are a total of 72 entries in the following categories: tremolo solo (open), chromatic solo (open and junior), duo (open and junior), trio (open and junior), 4-6 persons ensemble (open and junior), 7-13 persons ensemble (open), orchestra (open and juniro) and original. Among them, there are over 10 entries in each of the categories of chromatic solo (open), chromatic solo (junior) and duo (open).

兩年一度的亞太口琴節，繼上屆香港成功舉辦後，今年8月3至6日將回到十年前首屆的主辦地區──台北。預期本屆參加人數將達2500 人，規模為全球國際性口琴節之冠，盛況空前。口琴節涵蓋每一類口琴（如複音、全音階、半音階）、每一種口琴音樂（如古典、爵士、藍調），活動包括開幕禮、比賽、音樂會、大師班、講座、及閉幕禮。

香港共約有二百人參加本屆活動，人數為歷屆之冠，其中香港口琴協會組成的代表團有145人，成員都肩負了光榮的任務：

（一）代表團成員組成的80人口琴樂團將在8月3日的開幕禮首演本港作曲家梅廣釗博士專為口琴樂團創作的大型音樂作品──天上雲河。

（二）著名口琴演奏家何百昌、謝俊仁、何頡勳將演出多首本港作曲家的作品，向外地觀眾介紹香港原創音樂，包括許翔威的月光愛人幻想曲、擇善仁心（口琴與古琴）、鄧樂妍的二重奏。

（三）享負盛名之英皇口琴五重奏應邀於8月5日的演奏會中，聯同謝俊仁演出為口琴改編之德伏扎克的弦樂五重奏，編號97。

（四）七位香港口琴協會的代表應邀擔任今屆各項比賽的評判：

（二）李尚澄──1967年德國世界口琴節二重奏亞軍
